The directive was to get a proof of performance on the air utilizing our community (whose demographics ranged from toddlers to senior citizens). I pitched an idea to have viewers call into a specific voice mail and “read” letters they had written to the station. Not only did this cultivate community relations, but also provided some very intriguing, authentic, user-generated content. This was about a year before we were allowed to use Facebook or Twitter for on-air promotions, and it also allowed viewers to be a part of the WTTW community.
